Colour is who leads, and by how much. Every race, county and district takes the colour of the candidate ahead in the count: blue for a Democrat, red for a Republican, grey for anyone else. The deeper the shade, the wider the lead (0–5, 5–10, 10–20, 20–40, 40+ points of all votes). Races with no votes yet are drawn in the card’s dark tone; places with no election are black.
Shift from 2024 colours the same ground by how far it has moved since the 2024 presidential race: this year’s Democratic-minus-Republican margin, counting the two major parties only, less Harris’s margin over Trump there. Blue moved toward the Democrats and red toward the Republicans; the deeper the shade, the bigger the move (0–2, 2–5, 5–10, 10–15, 15+ points). A state on the House map, or a whole legislative chamber, is its contested districts taken together, weighted by votes. A race without both a Democrat and a Republican on the ballot has nothing to compare, and is drawn in the dark tone.
Hatching is a change of hands: the party ahead is not the party holding the seat now. A tick beside a candidate is civicAPI’s call, shown as published.
